Corkscrew history

The first corkscrews appeared in the middle of the 17th century. It is probably an English invention.

It is generally thought that the idea comes from the twisted worm of the bulletpiece (or bulletpiece) supplied with the firearms. Corkscrews were originally manufactured by gunsmiths who were members of the City of London guilds. It was also at this time that the English began to age their wines in bottles rather than barrels. Before that, the wine regions had the practice of keeping the wine in barrels and pulling it out in jugs.

With the industrial era, the shape of glass bottles changed from the so-called “onion bulb” shape to the cylindrical shape we know today, making it easier to store them. At the same time, as the neck of the bottle is narrower, it is necessary to manufacture caps with parallel sides that are compressed before inserting them into the bottle to ensure a perfect seal. A cork extractor or “corkscrew” has therefore become essential. The first patented corkscrew dates back to 1795, and it was invented by the English Samuel Henshall.
